“Ponies Educating Diabetics and Siblings”
‘Taster’ sessions for diabetic children
| Dates and Times | |
| Saturday 20th November | 11am to 2.30pm |
| Sunday 28th November | 11am to 2.30pm |
| Saturday 4th December | 11am to 2.30pm |
The ‘taster’ sessions will be held at weekends and are deliberately planned to occur over lunch, incorporating fun and learning with horses. Children will bring their lunch and blood test kits with them. We plan to have 4 – 5 children (families are invited) at each session.
The event will revolve around teaching children about horses with laminitis/ cushings disease – conditions comparable with diabetes. The children will get an insight into how exercise and food affect the glucose level of the horse, and how blood testing supports decisions around food. The importance of cleanliness and hygiene are covered too. They will then test their blood levels and review their own lunch against the results, raising awareness of nutrition.
Through a fun activity involving horses, the children gain an understanding of their condition in a transferable rather than direct way.
Cost: £5 per child attending
